Kanu Uncho from Ikki Tousen

Alter Kanu Unchou from Ikki Tousen Figure Review

Although I like Kanu Uncho, I wouldn’t call her one of my favorite anime characters, particularly given her questionable characterization in the last two seasons of Ikki Tousen. Nonetheless, I own more figures of Kanu than any other character, and Alter’s version is number six in my collection. I’ve had it sitting in its box for a couple of months now, and today seems like an auspicious day to write about her since I want to watch basketball and I think I can bang out this review real quickly.

Amanda Werner from Blassreiter

Yamato Amanda Werner from Blassreiter Figure Review

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular figures on Tsuki-board. There’s this K-On! girl, who’s just a skinny little kid. Black Rock Shooter‘s chest is practically concave. Miku’s head looks wider than her shoulder blades. Dead Master appears to be in desperate need of some Plumpy’nut. Anime girls generally trend towards the anorexic, but some studios appreciate the curvature, and Nitroplus definitely falls in that category. We’ve seen a lot of figures of Nitroplus characters and many of them are busty and full-figured, but Amanda redefines what it means to bring the boom.

Preorder Outlook V

It feels like it’s been a slow year for exciting figure releases, but there have been a few impressive figures announced recently so it seems like an appropriate time to take a look at some upcoming releases. As usual, pictures are shamelessly borrowed from Hobby Search and Amiami, my favorite places to buy figures.

Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion (Motorcycle Version 1)

E2046/Vispo Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion Figure Review

Continuing with the Evangelion kick, let’s take a look at Asuka as a motorcycle racer. There is a peculiar dearth of Asuka figures out there, although Alter and Kotobukiya each recently unveiled figures of her in her recent motion picture form. When I try to think of a definitive Asuka figure, my mind draws a blank, and so it doesn’t bother me when I see any of the Eva girls dolled up in a manner incongruent with their anime presentation. Heck, they’ve been used to pitch canned coffee and instructional typing software, among other things, making them perhaps the most protean anime characters around.

Dakimakura Review – Nagomi & Sono from Illust Guerrilla (NSFW)

Illust Guerrilla Nagomi and Sono Dakimakura Review

When I wrote my first dakimakura review, I mumbled something about wanting the raunchiest one I could find. And yeah, the Tony one is pretty explicit, as are many things based on Tony’s art. My newest pillowcase – my seventh dakimakura – however, stands far apart from my other ones in terms of salaciousness. Compared to it, Tony Taka’s dakimakura are as mild and inoffensive as 3-2-1 Contact.

Mari Illustrious Makinami from Neon Genesis Evangelion

Kotobukiya Mari Illustrious Makinami from Neon Genesis Evangelion Figure Review

The longevity and impact of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise is nearly without peer in anime, and a large part of its lasting popularity is due to its iconic characters, particularly Rei and Asuka. And what’s not to like about them? Both are young, sexy girls who are curiously well-developed for their age and wear tight bodysuits when going into battle. One is a taciturn, robotic introvert and the other is an assertive, mercurial hotshot with the temperament of nitroglycerin.

None of Gainax’s other properties have come close to the endurance of their foremost creation, and so they’ve taken the obvious course of action and remade the series, sticking in a new girl in the process. In this hobby, it’s the closest thing to having your own money printer.

Psylocke from the Uncanny X-Men

Kotobukiya Psylocke from The Uncanny X-Men Figure Review

When Kotobukiya introduced the world to their Marvel Bishoujo line, I immediately thought that Psylocke was an obvious choice for that series. She’s Asian, she’s hot, she doesn’t wear many clothes, she’s a perfect match. Kotobukiya took their time announcing her, but announce her they did and while I was thrilled, my happiness was tempered by the fact that Rogue and the Black Widow fell short of what they could have been. Regardless, Psylocke is my favorite Marvel Comics character, so there was never any question of whether I would acquire her.

Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno from Keumaya (NSFW)

Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno from Keumaya Figure Review

I’ve reviewed a couple of Keumaya figures here and I think I’ve converted a few people on the interwebs into Keumaya fans. I’ve been looking forward to Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno for a while and now that she is here I am happy to spread the good word about Keumaya once more.

Elwing from Shining Wind (Goddess of Forest Version)

Kotobukiya Elwing from Shining Wind Figure Review

You know, character introductions can be really tough for me to write sometimes, especially when I don’t know jack about a character’s background. When I do, it’s pretty easy, but for a character like Elwing here, I don’t really know anything about her and I’ll sit in front of the keyboard trying to come up with something witty to write, but in this case, I want to go back to playing video games and admiring my new pillowcase, so I’m just going to say that I like Tony Taka’s art, I like big figures, I like cheap figures, and I like figures where the subject isn’t wearing many clothes. Put all those together and you’ve got my attention, and that’s why I have Elwing.

Dakimakura Review – Natsuru Senou from Kämpfer

Natsuru Senou from Kampfer Dakimakura Review

As expensive as dakimakura are – for rectangular pieces of fabric with a picture printed on them, anyway – I keep buying them. Here we have one of the main character of Kämpfer, and also probably the closest that this site is going to get to featuring a review of a hobby item with a dude.
