Dakimakura Review – Rinne Amamiya from Pure Girl in Love (NSFW)

So I lied! Or more specifically, the plaster is still drying so the next figure is still awaiting her turn in the spotlight. In the meantime, we’ll take a quicky look at this pillowcase, which I’ve had sitting around for a while. The lady depicted here is named Rinne Amamiya and she’s an original character drawn by Itsuka Miyatsuki. Her “series” is nominally titled Koisuru Junjou Shoujo, or something like “Pure Girl in Love,” though as far as I can tell that title is a completely made-up thing concocted just for this pillowcase. The original product page even gives a very short and sparse backstory for this character, in which she tentatively offers her love to her chosen one, which is presumably the owner of this pillowcase. How adorable. As franchises like the Vocaloid series and Kantai Collection show, you really don’t need more than a pretty picture to successfully peddle anime goods.

Hakufu Sonsaku from Ikki Tousen (NSFW)

It feels like it’s been a while since a notable Ikki Tousen figure was released. That’s sort of an odd thing to think, as a common complaint from a few years back was that too many companies were making Ikki Tousen figures. However, most of those figures were of fan favorites Kanu Unchou and Ryomou Shimei; nominal lead girl Hakufu Sonsaku never got that many figures. I suppose that’s not that surprising; while she was one of the first characters to be introduced in the manga, she wasn’t really all that interesting, and she never seemed to achieve the sort of popularity that the other characters gained. That alone makes this figure peculiar; what makes it even more unusual is its styling. Ikki Tousen’s character designs don’t stray far from typical anime conventions, but this figure provides quite a different take on Hakufu, so much so that one might not have been able to identify this character at first glance, even if one were familiar with the series.

Of late, collectors of ero figures have much to be happy about. Alphamax has produced a number of quality hentai figures, Native’s goods are now far more accessible (at least to those who live in the countries that they ship to), and Daiki Kougyou is their usual eclectic self. It’s a little surprising, then, that it seems like Orchid Seed has lost a little luster during this interval, at least with respect to their status as a maker of ero figures. For one thing, they’ve shown a surprising reluctance to implement the sort of fully-explicit nudity that Native and Daiki Kougyou are well known for and that Alphamax has, quite surprisingly, energetically embraced. Also, they’ve never been a prolific figure maker, except perhaps in terms of producing recolored variants of existing products, and yet they consistently tease collectors at hobby conventions with numerous unpainted prototypes and artwork of planned future figures. Princess Milk was one such figure; it’s been four years since collectors learned of Orchid Seed’s plans to make her. It feels a little strange that, after she’s manifested merely as an illustration at so many Wonder Festivals, she’s finally here.

This pillowcase is a companion piece to this one of Kanane Kurashiki, which was sold at the same time from the same place. Both pillowcases feature art by Yoshiaki Katsurai, one of the better-known artists in the ero doujinshi industry.

In anime and anime culture, it occasionally happens that some unusual aspect or theme suddenly becomes popular, seemingly all at once. For instance, a couple of anime series centered on futuristic depictions of Oda Nobunaga appeared earlier this year. More broadly, incest has became a strangely persistent and ubiquitous feature of contemporary anime, and I’m at a loss to explain why. Figures are no less immune to this confluence of peculiar themes, and with this particular example, we may observe a tangible specimen of the phenomenon: namely, the toilet bowl seen here. Strangely, girls on toilets have become weirdly visible in figure collecting as of late, with Kaitendoh having released such a figure a few months ago and with Native set to release their own a few months from now. Why is the commode a thing amongst figure makers? Damned if I know. I do know it isn’t the first weird fad we’ve seen, though, and it certainly won’t be the last.

Another day, another Tony Taka figure. Not long ago, seeing so many Tony figures would’ve prompted a collective sigh of exasperation but these days, the way Alphamax does them, I’m very happy to see them. We looked at Velvet a few weeks ago and today, we’ll be looking at Iris Hartley. Iris is grouped under the Skytube label, which means that she has some significant differences from Velvet, particularly in ero content, which I’m sure will make some collectors happy.

Dakimakura Review – Kanane Kurashiki from Kokuhaku Lovers (NSFW)

The winter Wonder Festival convention will be upon us in just a few days and as the tradition here is to not write a post about it, we will instead take a quick look at a dakimakura cover. This one is by Yoshiaki Katsurai, an artist perhaps most famous for his erotic doujinshi, which are published under the circle name Basutei Shower. He’s also known for his contributions to the character designs of Dakara Boku wa, H ga Dekinai (officially translated as “So I Can’t Play H” but occasionally rendered “So I Can’t Have Sex With Her” or “So I Can’t Fuck Her!”). The particular character presented here is Kanane Kurashiki, one of the main characters in the manga Kurohaku Black Rubbers, which is a volume of the larger series Kokuhaku Lovers.

Dakimakura Review – Nagato from Kantai Collection (clesta Version) (NSFW)

It’s pillowcase show-and-tell time! Believe it or not, the dakimakura reviews are some of the most popular posts on this site. Yeah, I don’t understand it either. It’s been a while since we last looked at one, so we’ll take some time from the figure stuff to take a look at a pillowcase from Kantai Collection, the big new sexy thing in anime culture. We’ve seen this sort of thing before, such as with Touhou, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the Vocaloid stuff, all of which have established enduring appeal, and also with Black Rock Shooter, which flamed out with scarcely so much as a good-bye. Time will tell whether Kantai Collection will last through the fickle transience of modern culture. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Kantai Collection, it’s apparently a web browser-based card battling game, in which female characters named after Imperial Japanese Navy warships take on a variety of pasty-faced, glowy-eyed female adversaries, most of which are named after characters of the Japanese syllabary. I suppose that in this day and age, the United States Navy is an unsuitable opponent for this sort of thing, but I’m a little disappointed that there isn’t more fan art of the cute Japanese girls being accosted by personifications of Third Fleet warships. I mean, given how many famous US Navy officers served in the war, there are, at the least, some really good NTR possibilities there. Not that I like NTR or anything. But anyway! We have here a pillowcase featuring Nagato, one of the most famous ships of the Combined Fleet and, from what I can tell, one of the more popular characters from the series. Let’s take a look at her.

This particular figure is named Yuki; she’s a character from the ero-manga Maid Bride, which can claim the impressive feat of having spawned three figures from just the artwork on its dust jacket. I’m a big fan of the artist, as are a lot of people, so it’s great to see more of his art getting the 3D treatment; let’s take a look at how this figure turned out.
