Junko Hattori from Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou (Queen’s Gate Version)

Junko Hattori figure

One of the nice things about Hobby Japan’s Queen’s Gate series is that it gives a spotlight to a few characters who wouldn’t otherwise get a lot of love from figure makers. Dizzy was one, at least until Alter made their figure, and I’ve also ordered Ivy Valentine’s figure, since she’s only gotten a few thus far. I gave some thought to trying to get the Queen’s Gate figure of Katja from Seikon no Qwaser, but while I like the character, I would’ve liked the figure more if she were in her dominatrix outfit. Curiously, Lily from Namco’s Tekken series stands out as the sole Queen’s Gate character not to get a figure thus far. That’s a shame; I wouldn’t mind seeing a figure of her, especially in her 3P costume. Oh well. Junko Hattori is another character that would seem an unlikely candidate for a conventional, mass-market figure; she’s not generally regarded as one of the best characters from her show, and her show is primarily known for its absurd level of incoherence. At any rate, I do like both the character and the way that she looks, so even though having to go through a proxy service is a bit of a hassle, I ordered her right away and here she is now.

Dizzy from Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (Alter Version)

Dizzy from Guilty Gear X2

Back when I wrote about Kotobukiya’s Dizzy, I mentioned that I wished a better manufacturer like Alter or Max Factory had done the figure instead. Dizzy was the main reason I first played the Guilty Gear series and while I enjoy the games on their own merits now, Dizzy is still one of my favorite characters across all fictional media. While I did not dislike Kotobukiya’s figure, I still hoped that someone would do a better job of it. I didn’t expect to ever see that happen; after all, I’ve been pining away for an Irma figure – since MegaHouse has done almost all of the other Queen’s Blade figures – and an Itsuki Kannagi figure – since Good Smile Company sponsored Sora Kake Girl – to no avail. But fate works in strange ways and Dizzy now has two figures. I’d still like to see Irma and Itsuki get figures but when it comes to wishes made on a wing and a prayer, one out of three ain’t bad at all.

Emaretta-chan from the Art of Shunya Yamashita (Black Armor Version)

Yamato Emaretta from Shunya Yamashita Figure Review

2011 may be the year of Tamaki and Miku Hatsune, but here at Tentacle Armada, we are busy celebrating the greatness of the beautiful fighting girl. Four of the seven figure reviews posted here since the start of the year have featured swordsgirls and today we have the fifth. Another Tamaki figure is probably next up but for now, we shall continue showing our love for big-eyed anime girls in tiny bikinis with big swords. It’s a classic combination that can’t be beat.

Mai Shiranui from The King of Fighters XIII (Hipline Version)

Alphamax Mai Shiranui from KOF Figure Review

Back in my review of Kotobukiya’s Dizzy, I lamented that fighting games aren’t a more popular source for figure makers. That hasn’t changed at all in the year since I received that figure. In fact, I can think of only a few figures of fighting game characters that have been released since then – A-Label’s Vanessa, and I suppose the Noel Vermillion nendoroid, if you count that as a figure. 2011 isn’t looking any more promising, with the major ones being another Dizzy, a peculiarly pachycephalic Kasumi, and this figure right here. With a bunch of fighting games – Marvel vs. Capcom 3, the two Tekken and Street Fighter crossovers, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, and the 3DS version of Dead Alive – scheduled for release, and with Super Street Fighter IV and BlazBlue still going strong, hopefully the situation will change and the girls of these games will grace us with more figures.

Leina from Queen’s Blade (NSFW)

Daiki Kougyou Leina from Queen's Blade Figure Review

Some might say that going into a fight in nothing but your panties isn’t very smart. Well, when your first fight is against a lady with acid for milk, it’s the only thing to do. I mean, anybody who’s seen Aliens knows what happens when you get splashed with acid while encased in body armor; you wind up getting your arm burned off after it goes right through the plating. Nah, when you’re fighting jelly demons and fire mages, less is definitely more when it comes to protective gear.

Compact Hog from Tsukasa Bullet

Yamato Compact Hog from Tsukasa Bullet Figure Review

Here’s another girl with a gun. This used to be a staple of anime, but seems to have fallen out of favor with the zeitgeist and I can’t understand why. Maybe firearms aren’t moe? I dunno. I don’t even know what moe is, anyway. Jun Tsukasa’s art definitely ain’t moe, but I suppose if he tried to do something in the archetypical moe style, it’d look something like this girl here.

Amanda Werner from Blassreiter

Yamato Amanda Werner from Blassreiter Figure Review

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular figures on Tsuki-board. There’s this K-On! girl, who’s just a skinny little kid. Black Rock Shooter‘s chest is practically concave. Miku’s head looks wider than her shoulder blades. Dead Master appears to be in desperate need of some Plumpy’nut. Anime girls generally trend towards the anorexic, but some studios appreciate the curvature, and Nitroplus definitely falls in that category. We’ve seen a lot of figures of Nitroplus characters and many of them are busty and full-figured, but Amanda redefines what it means to bring the boom.

Psylocke from the Uncanny X-Men

Kotobukiya Psylocke from The Uncanny X-Men Figure Review

When Kotobukiya introduced the world to their Marvel Bishoujo line, I immediately thought that Psylocke was an obvious choice for that series. She’s Asian, she’s hot, she doesn’t wear many clothes, she’s a perfect match. Kotobukiya took their time announcing her, but announce her they did and while I was thrilled, my happiness was tempered by the fact that Rogue and the Black Widow fell short of what they could have been. Regardless, Psylocke is my favorite Marvel Comics character, so there was never any question of whether I would acquire her.

Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno from Keumaya (NSFW)

Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno from Keumaya Figure Review

I’ve reviewed a couple of Keumaya figures here and I think I’ve converted a few people on the interwebs into Keumaya fans. I’ve been looking forward to Hyper Nurse Victory Yuno for a while and now that she is here I am happy to spread the good word about Keumaya once more.

Zabrina from Cabal Online

E2046 ORI Zabrina from Cabal Online Figure Review

With the exception of a brief moment of weakness during the recent Star Trek Online beta test, I’ve been MMO free since kicking the Warcraft habit a year and a half ago. I don’t miss the games at all, but I still like looking at the character designs that populate the various games in the genre. Apparently E2046 does as well, as they’ve turned time and again to MMOs for inspiration, and so here we have Zabrina, their latest figure.
