Doll Review – vmf50 Yumi (NSFW)

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

I’m a big fan of Yamato’s vmf50 doll line. They’re fun to dress up and display and not too many people buy them or even know about them, and as I’ve got this odd tendency to dislike anything that becomes mainstream, that’s a big plus in my view. I bought Yumi a couple of months ago but she got ensnared by the printer ink cartridge bomb scare fiasco. Fortunately that blew over reasonably fast so we can take a closer look at her now.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

Yumi is the fourth of Yamato’s vmf50 Original Concept Image Girl series, with Miu, Risa, and Miki being the first three dolls. Like all the others, she’s fifty centimeters tall, as the vmf50 name suggests. She seems to be fairly rare; I think she was briefly sold on Yamato’s web store and also at summer Wonder Festival in 2010, but I hardly ever see her on Yahoo Japan Auctions. That’s where I picked this one up – it was technically preowned, having been used as a display piece and also having had its head replaced at some point. I used Yokatta Web as my proxy service.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi and Risa

I’ve reviewed Risa – renamed Simone in my collection – before, and Yumi is pretty much the same doll as her. I’ve provided some basic information regarding the vmf50 dolls there so if anyone’s interested in procuring one, you can check out that post. Yumi uses the Type E body rather than Risa’s Type D, but they seem to be structurally identical. Yumi’s eyes are also of nearly identical design to Risa’s.

Incidentally, while I renamed Risa, I guess I’ll stick with the name Yumi for this one though if anyone has any suggestions for a new name, I am happy to hear them. Oh, and speaking of Simone, I got her some spiffy new boots.

The major difference, of course, is that Yumi’s skin is darker than Risa’s. You don’t see tanned girly dolls too often so Yumi stands out a lot. She’s got blue eyes rather than Risa’s golden ones, and she’s also got lavender lipstick and pink fingernail and toenail polish. Her skin seems shinier, too; there’s an odd glare spot that shows up on her cheeks when a bright light is shone on her face. It’s not conspicuous under normal circumstances but it makes taking her picture a bit more complicated.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

Like the other vmf50 original girl dolls – other than Miu – she doesn’t come with many accessories. In fact, she doesn’t even come with clothing or a wig – a wrap of tissue paper is the only thing that protects her modesty. It’s expected that the collector will procure their own to customize Yumi to his or her own liking. I’m using a standard Yamato long-hair wig here; it’s sized somewhere between 7 and 8 and tends to slip off her head very easily; I probably should put a patch of velcro on her scalp to hold it in place. Yumi comes with an extra pair of hands, a metallic base, and that’s it. She’s got magnets in her feet to hold her up on that base, though she’s still somewhat unstable so I’m using some cheap, conventional doll stands that I bought at a local arts and crafts store.

Yumi nude front view

The vmf50 body is a derivative of Obitsu’s 50 centimeter bodies, with a vinyl outer shell and a plastic inner skeleton. Obitsu also makes a 48 centimeter tall body, which was used in Azone’s 1/3 scale Fate Testarossa doll. You can see some of the differences in this post. Yamato’s modifications to the Obitsu body include giving it a bit more musculature and of course, providing anatomically-correct detailing to the nipples and genitalia.

Procuring vmf50 clothing can be a bit difficult because of their oddball size and esoteric nature compared to other doll lines. Yamato offers a number of clothing options and there are a few other third party ensembles to select from. Here, the bondage harness and brassiere and thong sets come from TcDoLL and most of the other clothes are from Yamato’s Girl-holic line. Stockings, socks, and accessories come from Dollmore; most of them are MSD-sized, as they don’t offer anything specifically tailored to the vmf50 or 50 centimeter Obitsu bodies. I am not actually sure what an MSD doll is, but Wikipedia tells me that it’s a doll with a child-like stature that stands about 42 centimeters tall. Regardless, they generally fit fine; the SD-sized stuff is a bit too large. The lace stockings that Yumi is wearing are SD-sized and extend all the way up her legs.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

Incidentally, Yamato’s promo photos of Yumi showed her with heart-shaped stickers and piercings in her lower lip, navel, and clitoris. The actual doll doesn’t include them, which could be a positive or a negative depending on your point of view. Me, I’m trying to think of a way to give her nipple piercings without actually damaging her chest.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

I’m a big fan of the vmf50 series and I currently own three – Risa, Yumi, and Miu Kanzaki, whom I have yet to review. They’re not particularly mainstream, they’ve got a lot of sexy clothing options that appeal to my peculiar tastes, and they look great. I don’t know how many doll-collecting perverts are out there – not many, I’d guess, since most of the Dollfie stuff I see out there is pretty tame – but the vmf50 will appeal to anybody who likes their dolls wearing less.

I wish I had a doll-sized football to give better context to this pose.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

Here are some flexibility tests. She can spread her legs much wider than this. Wow, that sounds terrible, doesn’t it?

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review
Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

My Yumi figure came with a dislocated left leg. The leg connects to the hip via a protruding peg that inserts into a socket in the hip. However, it’s rather difficult to get it back in there because the socket is vinyl and flexes when you try to press the peg into it. The leg stays on the body fine and she can stand up fine, but it swings freely, which complicates posing her with that leg lifted up in the air. She’s in better shape than my Miu figure, though, who has two dislocated legs. That was entirely my fault, because I had to pull her legs off of her to get her skirt over her thighs and hips and didn’t do a good job of reattaching them.

Yamato vmf50 Yumi Review

Speaking of Miu, Yamato USA is selling her on their website, if anyone is interested in procuring a vmf50 doll. Only $930! Heh. I mention this because I have a particular interest in seeing more vmf50 products being sold in the United States. I probably ought to get around to reviewing her already – I don’t intend on changing her clothes so I can knock those photos out much, much faster than Yumi’s.

The T-800 is just upset he’s shorter than the girl. Though hmm, he doesn’t actually look upset. Actually, he’s got a big goofy-ass grin there. It sorta makes it hard to believe he’s a relentless killing machine who does not feel pity, or remorse, or fear. Maybe he’s got plans for the girl. Or maybe he just saved five percent or more on his car insurance. I dunno.

Wonderful sets of bondage gear you have there. Glad we finally got to see some of your accessories, the new doll, and more of the lovely Simone. I’d be interested in getting a doll eventually, but the two things holding me back currently are the previously discussed joints (seeing as I’d also probably go with bondage gear/lack of clothing) and the price. Good to see that one is available on a US site, but $930? Ouch.

    • The Endless General says:

      What, it’s only $930……..

      • Shashin says:

Hey now, that could buy me 3-7 pillowcases!

        • The Endless General says:

Or a bunch of figures lol. I don’t think I could talk myself into spending that much on any one figure though. Hell, all of the preorders I have from here to August only add up to about $1200, and that’s for a lot of figures.

      • Tier says:

I wish that had been an option back when I bought Miu; I had to go through a proxy instead. <.<

        • Shashin says:

So after proxy fees and the like, the total came out past $930? >_>

I’m completely obvious to the Japanese price of the dolls; I knew they were expensive, but I was thinking this was one case where the goods actually got marked up a substantial amount with an official English release. I’m sorry for you if my assumption was wrong. ๐Ÿ™

          • Tier says:

You bet ๐Ÿ˜€ Her price tag was over four figures when all was said and done. And I don’t mean the PVC type.

Miu’s price tag in Japan was 68,000 yen, which works out to about $826, so there’s some markup there but not a huge amount, given the cost of international shipping and such. I don’t think Volks marks up their dolls substantially for US release, though I’m no Dollfie expert so I wouldn’t know. From what I can tell though, it’s a lot cheaper to buy them from their US branch rather than to pick it up using a proxy.

    • Tier says:

Thanks! Yeah, the price is problematic, particularly for vmf50 dolls, since virtually all the dolls, clothing, and accessories require a proxy to procure. I think Dollfies are a bit cheaper since you can get the bodies and clothing from Volks’s US operation. It’s curious how Volks’s dolls are readily available in the states but their garage kits and PVC stuff is not. I know a guy who wanted to customize his doll but he couldn’t afford a vmf50 body, so he rolled with a Dollfie Dream. His doll looks way, way, way different from the typical dolls you see elsewhere.

I got more vmf50 accessories on order. Hopefully they get here soon cuz I’m really looking forward to it.

  2. drakanity says:

Any difference between this and other dollfies? Or are they pretty much the same? I’m not too familiar with them in general.

I was interested in a couple, but they are way too expensive. Although there was one customized Suigintou dollfie from Rozen Maiden that I loved and may possibly consider if it was available, but unfortunately it is not since I think it was customized by someone.

    • Tier says:

Generally speaking they’re pretty similar. The vmf50 body is shorter; Dollfie Dreams are like 58-60 centimeters tall while vmf50s are 50 centimeters tall. Volks is supposed to be introducing a new doll body called Dollfie Dream Sister that uses a 50 centimeter tall body, which is going to further confuse things. Though it could also be helpful to me since people might start making clothes for them, which will make it easier for me to dress up my dolls.

It is definitely an expensive hobby, so I’m glad there aren’t that many vmf50 dolls available. Though I’ve got Super Sonico on order. I guess I’ll need to get some clothes for her.

  3. Fabienne says:

Oh this tanned Yumi looks really pretty. the white lingerine stuff which you gave her in picture vmf50-yumi-15.jpg looks really good at her, especially these stockings =)
the sm outfit suits Risa better in my opinion she looks cooler in it than Yumi.
do you actually have a bit more casual clothes for your dolls, like trendy skirts for example ?

    • Tier says:

Yeah, I like those stockings, I would’ve used them with the harness if I had some shoes for her XD It’s kinda hard to find good shoes for vmf50 bodies that don’t cost way too much money.

Unfortunately I don’t have anything casual yet, which is a problem for me because I’ve ordered Sonico and I think I’m going to dress her normally. I mean, I’ll probably put her in a spare bondage harness for a couple of pictures, since she’s got that Orchid Seed bondage figure coming out soon, but I’d like to give her a guitar and some cute and stylish clothes. Yamato has this miniskirt which is pretty cute but I don’t see it available anywhere. I also really like the short skirts and schoolgirl outfits a few pictures down in this post, and this kimono is nice too.

      • Fabienne says:

Nothing against these sexy outfits, but you should try to get some casual clothing as well, I think they would look great in more casual outfits.
thats a really nice skirt ๐Ÿ˜‰ ,would Dollfie clothes fit your vmf50 Dolls, too ?

        • Tier says:

I’m looking around for some but not having a ton of luck ๐Ÿ™ I do got a few ideas in mind, though. That’s the crappy part about buying relatively obscure dolls, it’s hard to find clothing and it’s even harder to find clothing that’s been sold out for a while.

I don’t think Dollfie clothes will fit very well, though I’m not completely sure about that. Looking at the second picture on this post, it looks like a Dollfie is a lot taller than a vmf50 doll, assuming that doll on the left actually is a Dollfie Dream doll. Hmm, though maybe skirts will fit okay. Maybe I’ll try to get a cheap Dollfie Dream skirt and try it on one of my dolls. Now that I think about it, that might be a better option for Sonico because she has a much fuller backside than the Risa and Yumi bodies.

  4. Chag says:

LOL. I love seeing photos of your dolls. You put the exploitative potential of these dolls to work. =)

I wonder if anyone out there makes custom heads/faces like the ones Blasefisch keeps on tweeting about for vmf50 dolls. Having Simone riding the rope could be so much more if she had the face to match the situation.

    • Tier says:

Thanks! This set of photos took a long time to do because of all the clothes swapping and my general incompetence at photographing poseables, but I gotta admit that I enjoyed it a lot.

I think some of them may fit; I vaguely recall that some of them may be Obitsu heads, and I think Obitsu heads meant for the 50cm body should fit okay on the vmf50 body, being that they’re built off the some skeleton as far as I know.

Speaking of the rope, I’m thinking I shoulda actually used a real rope rather than yarn. Or maybe a chain … riding a chain would look kinda cool.

  5. Ashlotte says:

Ugh god gtfo with your temptations…a figure a month is bad enough I don’t even want to think about how insane buying clothes and stuff would be if I got into this sort of thing…

    • Tier says:

Ha, you like the dollies, no? Doll clothes are expensive as hell … even insubstantial clothes like the bondage garments that I doll my dolls up in are expensive. I’m going to try to put together a more casual wardrobe for Sonico and I’m thinking it’s going to cost more than I’ve spent on clothes for myself in the last three years (which wouldn’t be saying much I guess, since the only clothes I’ve bought for myself in that time are one pair of shoes, socks, boxers, and I think a couple of cheap collared shirts from Target).

  6. JessyP says:

Yes! I live for your vmf50 photos. I much prefer these to the dolfies. The tennis shoes and high socks look really great. My one suggestion is to extend the wonderful background fabrics all the way to the foreground. Love both the lace and crimson backdrops. They give a great boudoir feeling when combined with the fetish clothes. That’s what makes seeing the wood desk a bit jarring. Either way, keep the vmf50 photos coming!

    • Tier says:

I’m glad you liked them! Yeah, I gotta get some longer pieces of fabric for doll photographs. I’m going to try to get some black velvet or something from a fabric store, and maybe I’ll get some window drapes. The red background is a tablecloth which works okay for PVC figures but isn’t nearly big enough for two feet-tall dolls.

More vmf50 photos shall be on the way! Soon, I hope, depending on the mail service.

  7. The Endless General says:

Got my Rouage today. It’s funny because while she certainly isn’t the first figure I’ve bought that can be displayed unclothed, she is the only one I have that does NOT have the option to be displayed completely clothed lol.

    • Tier says:

New loots are always awesome. Did you get her from Hobby Search or a different retailer? I’m kinda wondering how Hobby Search’s no-Paypal policy for adult items works (which is to say, whether it actually works or not).

I remember just a few years ago I paid a huge premium for a figure that had a removable shirt, just cuz I wanted a figure that had her tits hanging out. Nowadays we have figures that don’t even have the option not to have their tits hanging out. What a great hobby this is … if nendoroids didn’t exist, I’d say that I approve of the direction the industry is moving towards.

      • The Endless General says:

I got her from Hobby Search, I payed via credit card because it gave me the option to do so when I preordered her. It’s funny, I’ve noticed that you can’t do that any more; all preorders I’ve made after their policy change only give me the option to pay with paypal. I wouldn’t mind this, but they still have products that say “cannot be purchased with paypal”. In fact I preordered Daiki’s Comic gum cover version Ryomou which had that message, but they only gave me the option to use paypal. I’m curious to see how that’s gonna play out.

        • Shashin says:

Nothing will come of it unless they change their policies soon. I imagine it’s just a way to keep Paypal off their back for listing adult items. I’ve purchased at least a handful of items through Paypal that had that message, and they never said a single thing about it; I just always got the invoice in the mail, with the Paypal payment link.

          • The Endless General says:

That’s what I figured would happen. It was just strange not having the option to pick credit card anymore. Honestly I would rather use Paypal; I’m not the biggest fan of having funds automatically drawn from my account with little to no warning. I like having control of that lol.

Speaking of Hobby Search and Paypal; I got my payment notice for Selvaria. I was browsing the other day and saw that they had restocked her, so naturally I placed my order without hesitation (that’s kinda strange because I usually only do that for characters I like a lot; all I know about Selvaria is that she detonates herself like an atomic bomb in Valkyria Chronicles). The problem is now I don’t think I can actually afford her at the moment. I have three days to decide, but it’s a tough call lol.

          • Shashin says:

Yeah, I used credit card to begin with, but I soon switched over to Paypal for all international charges. I’m fairly certain that due to the Japanese charge system, my company was charging me twice, effectively doubling the cost of items. The balance was deducted from my limit and appeared on my balance a few days after the charge, and then was charged again when it appeared on my statement a few weeks later. Obviously it was better to pay the crappy yen rate (usually 4-5 lower than what my credit card company was giving me), then even the slightest chance I was paying 100% more than I should have been.

It’s also nice to wait a few days for payment to go through versus having it charged immediately when everything comes in. I actually had Hobby Search charge some stuff a bit early once, and it took me just over my limit, as I had just put in a payment earlier that day to increase my limit, but it hadn’t gone in yet. So they had me verify my credit card information and supply ID and everything; it’s really funny considering I’m positive they were the source of my credit card number being stolen a few months back (I was certain of it even before they released information that their system was compromised.)

I have her, though I haven’t opened her yet. She comes in a fairly big box for the scale, and looks beautiful through the plastic window. I’ve thought about not paying a Hobby Search order a time or two, but I always managed to scrape up the money; I was just too worried about them closing my account with some 8000 points to spend. Don’t know lenient they will be if you decide not to go through with it, so it’s definitely something to consider if the risk is them closing your account.

          • The Endless General says:

Yeah I payed for her like five minutes ago; I don’t need much convincing lol. They seem pretty adamant about you paying, seeing as how their account close warning is written in big, bold red letters lol. Couldn’t risk that.

She looks really cool in the promo shots, plus blowing yourself up to take an entire army down with you is probably the most badass way to go out……….so that alone makes her a good decision lol.

It’s amusing that for someone who hasn’t played the game (I don’t even own a ps3), I have a pretty good understanding of the plot. The scene where Isara dies is, in my opinion, the saddest moment in videogame history, and I can admit as a male and without shame that it chokes me up every time I see it lol.

  8. ReMeDy says:

Two questions: I’m looking at the e2046.com site. If I want to order the Senjyogahara Hitagi figurine, will I have to paint it? E2046’s specifications are kind of vague. It says painting is required near the bottom, but the preview of the figurine is already painted, so wtf?
    http://www.e2046.com/product/12394

Also, what’s PVC versus non-PVC mean? What’s the difference? PVC dramatically increases the price. Isn’t PVC a type of plastic? Why is it so much more expensive and is it worth it?:
    http://www.e2046.com/product/12139

    • Tier says:

You’ll have to paint the item listed in the first link. Basically that item is a counterfeit model kit; they break up the PVC figure, use the parts to create molds to cast their own kits, and then sell them to people who want to modify the figure or paint it with a different scheme (or who just enjoy building and painting models). The second link is the mass-produced PVC figure that you can get at any figure store. Yeah, PVC’s a type of plastic that is used for almost all completed, factory-made Japanese figures. Model kits are usually made of resin.

  9. Shashin says:

Yeah, I don’t want to risk it myself. Though I’ll admit, I really didn’t want the expensive Tomoe figure and couldn’t cancel her as she was over 20000 yen. If she had been pushed back another month or two, as she was already pushed back a few, I would have used all of my points in December/January, and then not sent payment. Definitely would have been a dick thing to do, but I was honestly an idiot when I preordered her; I was in the terrible habit of not even so much as looking at price when preordering, and then canceling a day or two after I had time to think about it. That didn’t go so well with Tomoe, and I kept an eye out after that.

I like the character. I wanted to play the game when I first read about it in a magazine, as I’m a big SRPG fan, and I liked the visual style. Didn’t have a PS3 at the time, and I actually watched the anime before I had a chance to play the game. Finally did get a PS3 and the game though, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

    • The Endless General says:

      Which Tomoe is that?

        • The Endless General says:

          21,000 huh? Pretty steep.

          • Shashin says:

Yeah, it was definitely a painful moment. After that, I made sure to check the prices for every item. It came out in December, and my future finances were questionable, so I unfortunately had to cancel Tony’s Miku and a few other figures that I had kinda wanted. I guess it’s pretty funny that I canceled everything and probably won’t order too many figures now; them closing my account wouldn’t have been that much of a loss.

I did take the chance to use my 8000 something points, though. With the expensive shipping (the box is the biggest figure box I’ve seen – tall as a normal box but about 2-3 in length) the figure only cost me $210ish. Still tempted to sell it, and maybe make a bit of profit, but I think it may be hard to find someone who’d even want to buy it for $250.

On an account closure related note, I have to say that AmiAmi is great. Even after me being a complete douche and bailing on a 2-3 orders without a single word, I still managed to get my invoice for January’s orders. Luckily it’s actually a manageable one this time, as I certainly couldn’t afford another $500 order and didn’t want to bail out on another order with them. Yay for Arcana Hearts 3!

          • The Endless General says:

I actually have Tony’s Miku preordered, but from a different place. I timed the releases of all my preorders to ease the blow when they ship lol. Well, except for Dizzy, Saber Alter, and Black Gold Saw…….I preordered those as soon as they opened on Hobby Search.

  10. Shashin says:

Dizzy was up for preorder when I was cutting back on just about everything, but I never denied it was a figure I needed, whether it was now or for an extra $100 later. HS preorders closed, so I went with AmiAmi after they sent me my latest invoice.

    • The Endless General says:

I use AmiAmi occasionally; I just usually roll with Hobby Search by force of habit. My problem is there are too many figures that fall into that “must have” category, although I’m not really all that keen on paying an extra $100 later on (though I have done that quite a few times). I need to cut back on figure spending though, I’ve gotten one every week in january so far, and it’s not going to let up till late february. Also, unlike Tier, I spend a lot of money on other things too. My phone bill alone is $120 a month; I could be getting another figure with that! Lol.

  11. Blowfish says:

Ive also put my Elina Revoltech in Shibari and man I had to search quite some time to find a decent guide for that. After reading that guide I actually wished that more girls I meet would seceretly wear them under their clothes.Im not really into bondage and stuff but that shit is kinda hot.

Its good to see that youre continuing to live the perverts dream with these dolls! Its always good to see your pictures in the morning while communting.Your Mothra X Simone Pictures seem to have been very interesting for co-commuters staring my my cell phones screen

    • Tier says:

Haha, that is awesome XD I’m pretty happy to have taken over the vmf50 search results on Google Images too … my pictures really stand out there.

I found a how-to-tie-shibari guide on Danbooru, I had seen it a long time ago but I never thought I’d actually get a chance to make use of it. It’s great how the internet is so useful for things I couldn’t have imagined learning fifteen years ago.

  12. Wolfheinrich says:

Awesome review! Noticed you mentioned you had a hard time finding clothes for your BAD. With Volks releasing the DDS body, which is about 50 cm tall; the clothing options for your BAD should improve.

    • Tier says:

Yeah, I hope so; I found some stuff at Dollmore but it’d be nice to have a wider selection to choose from. I hope that the stuff that fits DDSs fits Miu and Sonico; they’re kinda full-figured.

  13. polkadotbeetle says:

Depending on the type of jewelry y’want, little flatback crystals (swarovski maybe? or flatback pearls?) or metallic beads for the nipple piercings. And attach with say pvc glue or eyelash glue? something that’ll dry clear and come off easy.

And a question for you – would Sonico’s thighs fit (and look good) on Miu’s abdomen? Looking to make a little hybrid girl for myself. (รขโ€”ยร‚ยดรโ€ฐรฏยฝโ‚ฌรขโ€”ย)

    • polkadotbeetle says:

      …pva glue. /facepalm

    • Tier says:

Ah, okay, those sound like pretty good ideas. Unless I come up with an extra torso part, I’d rather avoid damaging the doll, so some kind of removable adhesive that cleans up without any residue seems like a good choice.

I have not tried swapping legs between dolls, but my gut feeling is that Sonico’s legs might look a bit strange on Miu, because the Type B body is so muscular. It really is a very distinctive body, but I have the sense that uniqueness might make it harder to move parts around.
