Dakimakura Review – Black Rock Shooter (NSFW)

Black Rock Shooter Dakimakura Dakimakura Review

It’s been a long time, I shouldn’t have left you, without a brand new dakimakura review. I’ve had a couple that have been paid in full for months but I didn’t get them until just a few days ago, no thanks to Japan Post and the US Department of Homeland Security. But that’s all in the past now and brighter and happier days are ahead. Has it really been seven months since my last dakimakura cover review? Why, yes, yes it has. New year, new pillowcase, let’s kick off 2011 the right way.

Black Rock Shooter Dakimakura Dakimakura Review

Here’s the full pillowcase in all its holdable, huggable glory. This dakimakura cover depicts Black Rock Shooter, a character who needs no introduction at all. It’s done by Evening Call, a relatively new circle that’s already done a bunch of cool stuff. The artist goes by the handle TID and the pillowcase itself is made of two-way tricot. It’s 50 centimeters wide and 160 centimeters long. And look at that, they remembered the star on the left side of her jacket.

I really like the way her face was drawn, it’s very pretty. Much prettier than any of Good Smile Company’s figures, in my opinion. I also like the two-tone color of her eyes.

Here’s her midsection, where she has all her usual hallmarks: her two scars, her string bikini top, her hot pants … it’s pretty much all there. She looks really nice. She also has a slightly warmer, more lifelike skin tone than her figures do.

So that’s that side, and it’s all good, but you know I don’t buy G-rated dakimakura covers. What’s on the back?

Here’s the other side. She looks a bit perturbed here, maybe even angry. I’m not really sure why.

Here’s the full length shot of this side. I really like her hair; it kinda looks like it’d be fun to pull on. She sure does have a cute ass. A great ass, even; I’ll fully admit that her ass was the main impetus that got me to buy this pillowcase. Very nice pose, too, it shows that ass to its best advantage. I wish her figures had a body like this.

I know what you guys want. Never say that I don’t deliver. Though I did forget to get an ass shot of Momohime and I don’t think I ever took one. Hmm.

Black Rock Shooter Dakimakura Dakimakura Review

She’s got vampire fangs, it seems. You usually see fangs – well, one fang – on anime characters who are mischievous or quirky, and I don’t know that Black Rock Shooter really qualifies as either, but it’s still cute. And she does usually get drawn with the skin complexion of a creature of the night.

Here’s the dakimakura cover stuffed with a pillow. It’s always a bit awkward to talk about a pillowcase; I find it difficult to describe how it feels through words. Hmm, well, it’s pretty soft and smooth. Very stretchy. If you don’t have a dakimakura cover of your own, you might be surprised by how thin and smooth it is compared to a typical, ordinary pillowcase. The printing is quite high quality, as I hope the photos attest.

And the other side while stuffed with a pillow. I very much like this pillowcase and yeah, I do realize how strange it is for me to be buying Black Rock Shooter merchandise when I’ve criticized Good Smile Company for pushing out so much BRS merchandise. It’s a good-looking pillowcase and any scruples I might have get defenestrated with the quickness when it comes to a dakimakura cover that I want. Yeah, Black Rock Shooter may not be my favoritest character but that view is subsumed when she’s presented as a cute naked anime girl with a fantastic ass.

2 dolls 2 dakimakura covers. Who be that in the back? Hmm.

I have yet to be able to talk myself into getting a dakimakura; I just don’t think I can justify it. While my spending habits are by no means reasonable, they’re just a bit too pricey. Plus I have a hard time explaining my figures already; there really is no explanation for hentai images emblazoned on a hugging pillow lol.

    • The Endless General says:

Unless I’m mistaken, that appears to be Nanoha on the pillow in the background lol.

    • Tier says:

Yeah, I wish they were cheaper, and in a more reasonable world they ought to be cheaper. I think their price is one of the things that give them their aura, though. Or stigma. You’ve got to be a bit crazier than the norm to go out and buy something like this not only because of the price, but because of the common subject material, as you say.

That does look like Nanoha indeed. Why does she look like that? Hmm …

  2. super rats says:

These things always look better when there’s no pillow. The hentai side is real sweet. Love it.

    • Tier says:

Indeed, and they’re a lot easier to photograph, too. Maybe I can get better stuffed shots if I lay the pillow on the ground and stand up on a chair with a wide-angle lens. I agree, the rear side is great, she’s got a really cute flustered expression and a really great body.

  3. Shashin says:

Wonderful! Very happy to say that I have this cover waiting for me in SMJ storage. Really like the art style of Evening Call, and this cover in particular. I’d say that the main draws for me in picking this up were the facial expression, hair, and wonderful, wonderful ass shot.

I like the dolls and other dakimakura cover I see in the background. :O

    • Tier says:

Yeah, all of those things are great and are also big reasons why I like it. I also like it because of the colors; the relatively drab, industrial black and white and blue scheme is a big change from the pastel blue and pink Nagomi & Sono pillowcase that I had on my pillow for so long.

I need to get a better doll photo setup going so I can photograph Yumi already. I guess I need to fix her hip joint so she can stand up properly, too.

  4. Fabienne says:

Wow thats a great illustration on this dakimura.
I love how they altered the face to make an appealing dakimura out of the nearly expressionless BRS character, It looks so much better with this lively expression, the details of her eyes and the small smile
of her mouth are so nice 😉 .
the backside is a nice extra, but the front is my favorite side 😉
A Poster of this illustration would be cool 😀

    • Tier says:

I agree, I like her friendly expression on the front and her unhappy expression on the back. It’s a big contrast from what you see in her GSC figures.

I’d love a poster of this pillowcase too. I guess I could hang it up but I like to put my dakimakura covers on pillows. Unfortunately I only have one pillow so I have to rotate them every time I get a new one.

  5. GREW says:

As I already talked with you in twitter, I really love her eyes.

But since I don’t collect those daikis at the moment, I won’t get her, even I’m a BRS Fan.

Something I don’t understand – why are daiki not censored?

    • Tier says:

I think the most likely answer is that because nobody would buy them if they were. I know I wouldn’t; I like the raunchy ones. Plus they are much more awesome this way.

  6. Chag says:

Aw shucks, I was hoping for a full frontal view as well, but this cover is a real treat regardless. I’m thankful for the deviation from Huke’s original illustrations. As great as they are, I doubt a anorexic, crazy-eyed corpse would be something that many would want to snuggle up against.

    • Tier says:

That would be creepy indeed. Not to mention those scars would look pretty funky with those swirly, pupil-less eyes. However … if she were giving birth to maggots, maybe that’d make it acceptable. There’s nothing more moe than that. On a related note, I am moderately disappointed to learn that there’s a pair of Mouryou no Nie dakimakura covers coming out soon but neither of them feature centipedes.

  7. Cantan says:

Oh I got this one about three months back to see what they were like. Got it for about $30 off a chinese seller though. I haven’t bothered using it as a pillow though, just drape it over one of my cupboard doors – sort of a hanging poster. Have to say that I much prefer the clothed side myself.

The version I have is slightly different though – she doesn’t have the trademark scars and the toggles on the ends of the draw string for her cloak are missing too – Chinese knock-offs eh.

Still a nice design (and well shot as ever) – approve of your selection (even if you don’t approve of my choice of retailer).

    • Tier says:

That’s an odd omission; I figured they’d just use the source artwork, which I think is available on Pixiv, though I’m not sure on that since I don’t actually have a Pixiv account myself, oddly enough.

And nah, I don’t cast judgment on what people buy (other than nendoroids) or where they buy it. Ethical arguments are something I stay the hell away from and I’m not interested in convincing people to take up my beliefs; it’d be supremely hypocritical for me to do that, anyway.

      • Cantan says:

Looking at it a few more times there are several omissions on my version – including the teeth on the zipper or whatever that is on the cape – makes me think that there was an original image which has been tweaked… though the scars… nah i dunno

        • Tier says:

Most strange. I thought that dakimakura would be pretty straightforward to bootleg since textiles are so easy to make; I used to see bootleg clothes all the time in Itaewon back in Korea. I bought quite a few pairs of fake Karl Kani jeans, too. I wonder if the illustrator purposefully left those out of the image for deterrence purposes.

        • drakanity says:

I’m curious if the facial expressions are also different. I notice a lot of the knock offs have the face not look correct. Like it was also altered.

I admit I have bought both real and knock offs and the face is almost always off with the knock offs.

IMO, I think they don’t copy it exactly due to two possible reasons.

One is what Tier said. It could get them out of trouble for copyrighted or bootleg material. I know for some things, as long as something is not exactly the same, they can get away with it. However, I don’t know remember it in detail exactly.

My second guess is they actually do not have a good source material. I notice a lot of images on pixiv are lower res images (well low res for printing), so I’m assuming they have some artist trying to blow it up and recreate the image.

That’s also why you always see an image where one has clothes on and one has it off. From what I can determine, the no clothes version is almost always something that is created by them. And if you look at the different sellers, some of the body detail is different 😛

          • Tier says:

I think your second guess is more likely; the original artists probably know that there’s no way they can stop bootlegging, but they can purposefully screw up their art or provide only low-res images which are less suitable for printing, as you say. I haven’t actually ever looked for bootleg pillowcases on eBay so I have no idea what their quality is like.

          • drakanity says:

I generally don’t look at the “pre-made” ones. I don’t know if they are actually already made and for sale, since there are custom ones which cost a bit more. But I normally order custom ones.

Custom you can use whatever picture you want. Each may use a different material as well. I’ve encountered peachskin, satin, and cotton.

To be honest, I like the satin material best which I don’t think any official company uses. The material feels the nicest plus makes the art stand out to me. It makes it seem more colorful. Shiny, but colorful haha.

I have one that I think is the best quality, even better than my official ones; although I only have 5 official ones. But of course it varies by the source material.

Also, do you know the difference between fabric materials? I believe the official ones use either two-way tricot, smooth knit, and some combo of polyester and something.

I’ve not encountered two-way tricot, so I’m thinking it is just more stretchy? I noticed two-way tricot costs a bit more for some reason.

  8. MONOLITHIC says:

Enjoyed the Rakim reference! 🙂 You got it to rhyme too!

BRS looks pretty good from the back!

Nendoriods… They’re cute, but overall, I don’t get the appeal.

    • Tier says:

Haha, that makes my day, I wasn’t sure if anybody was going to get that reference. BRS does have the sexy back. Would that her figures could say the same. And yeah, nendoroids really aren’t my bag. I guess bunches of people are buying them though, since GSC and MF showed their sales rankings for the year and it was like all nendoroids and Figmas.

      • MONOLITHIC says:

I’m a Hip-Hop head from way back and Rakim is my favorite MC of all time!

The original BRS has a nice little butt… Certainly has a bit more definition (POW!) than Diskvision EVE or Hattori Kiriko.

I’ll never buy or own a nendoroid. The Kanu one was super cute tho.

        • Tier says:

True indeed, I just ordered Kiriko because I’m an impulse-spending moron and while I’m looking forward to her, I’m still lamenting that lack of ass. I’ve got a couple of Kotobukiya figures on my desk waiting to be photographed that have pretty nice backsides in comparison.

I wonder if anybody ever noticed the random quotes down at the bottom of this page.

  9. Phi says:

Hi again Tier. A little while back, I wrote a comment on your Preorder Outlook post, asking you some figure advice (Dizzy or Maxima).

Well today, I noticed, while on Hobby Search, that both figures are having 15% slashed off their prices. As I am only a novice in figure collecting, I’ve no idea if this is a good time to buy either figure. In your experienced opinion, do you think this is as low as the prices will get?

Thank you so much for your continued dedication to this blog,
    Phi

    • The Endless General says:

The prices will usually get lower at some point, unless it’s something supremely popular. Even then it’s not usually until after the figure releases.

As far as a choice between Dizzy or Maxima; if you’re on the fence you could always go by price. Dizzy is definitely the more expensive, in fact she’s actually rather pricey for a 1/8 scale (that doesn’t deter me because she’s majestic and well worth it). Maxima seems like a figure that might visit the discount bin at some point, so you could grab her later at a potentially lower price.

Just my opinion on the matter lol.

    • Tier says:

Nah, for some reason, that’s a pro forma practice among Japanese figure retailers; neither Amiami or Hobby Search will ever charge the full listed retail price for a figure (I dunno about HLJ, their prices are usually higher than those two stores but they’ve been lowering prices slightly lately). Amiami usually offers a slightly larger discount, while Hobby Search usually charges a bit more but offers redeemable points that make up most of the difference (but you can only spend them at Hobby Search and of course, you have to place a second order later on). I’d say that now is as good a time as any to order either figure, particularly Dizzy; Alter’s figures don’t often hit the bargain bin and demand for Dizzy seems relatively high. Kotobukiya’s figures are generally priced cheaper and are often not difficult to obtain through US distribution channels, if you’re in the US.

Admittedly, I thought VN02 Miku Hatsune and Black Rock Shooter Animation Version were both going to be top sellers but both nearly set records with how quick and how far their prices crashed so I could be completely wrong.

      • drakanity says:

I’d also recommend Dizzy since I feel Kotobukiya figures are easier to find in general. Although I haven’t really been keeping up as much as I used to, I haven’t really seen much Kotobukiya figures through the US distribution like they used to have for every figure they made before. The domestic shops seem to now sell the JP versions. So prices aren’t as good as they were previously.

And from what I noticed, I find Amiami’s shipping is a tad higher. I had an order for the same figure at each store, and Hobby Search was cheaper to ship for the same ship method (EMS). I don’t know if it still holds true, but early on, Amiami also charged a set amount of yen extra for SAL as well.

I too felt like you Tier about BRS animation being a big seller. I had two pre-ordered, but canceled one luckily.

        • Tier says:

Funny story about shipping expenses: I got a bill for Alphamax’s Mai Shiranui figure recently and the shipping cost was 2700 yen for EMS, which isn’t anything unusual. However, I ordered her from Hobby Search back when they were running their 50% shipping discount promotion last summer, so her shipping price actually should’ve been 5400 yen. And reading Tsuki-board, Amiami is charging 11800 yen to ship this figure alone. I think I’d damn near have a heart attack if I got that charge just for shipping.

          • Cantan says:

            *cough* registered SAL *cough*

Patience is a virtue… and if you’ve already waited 4 months+, I figure that another couple of weeks aint anything special… that said, just received Emaretta yesterday… about 6 weeks after I ordered her – stupid Christmas post! Still she arrived and in good shape (followed by Siggy the next day – 4 weeks delay). Still, gotta love HLJ sales – seem to be the only worthwhile ones a lot of the time

          • Tier says:

I don’t think many retailers offer SAL shipping for that figure; it costs 20,000 yen and weighs nearly two kilograms. Hobby Search and HLJ definitely do not, anyway. I never roll with SAL for preorders (or most things) since I want my stuff quickly.

I picked up Emaretta-chan last month from HLJ’s sale and I still have her in her box. I guess I should remove her from it one of these days. She looks pretty good, though, I should’ve picked her up earlier; one US retailer had her relatively cheap with free shipping some months back.

          • Shashin says:

Heh, I’ve certainly had my fair share of shipping woes. Even just recently, I managed to push down my impatience and opt to ship my magazines by SAL if possible, since my figure purchase lineup has diminished. I had my order for December, with the usual set of magazines such as Dengeki, Megami, and Red Ichigo, and a few others, such as a Naked Apron art book that looks promising. Of course, since I had opted to ship this all together, SAL wasn’t a possibility. But the 8700 yen ship price was not expected. I guess that’s one flaw to the phonebook-like size of some Japanese magazines.

Been a tremendously busy couple of days, and I haven’t even played WoW. I’m quite happy to say that my “Room of Guilty Pleasures” as I’ll probably call it, is coming along well. Still very messy and I’ve yet to figure out how to hang the dakimakura covers (currently thinking of using hangers with clips, but that seems both expensive and silly.) But it really feels good to know that I’ll have a dedicated area for all of my stuff once I get around to unpacking all the boxes and arranging everything.

Here’s what it looks like currently, and I’ll be sure to take plenty of pictures of the finished product:

            http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/7599/previewbt.jpg

          • Tier says:

I’m looking forward to seeing that. Hangars with clips might work; I use clothes pins to hold up my pillowcases for photographing.

  10. The Endless General says:

While on the general topic of the BRS franchise (albeit in scandalous dakimakura form); I wonder when Good Smile is gonna get on the stick and set a release date for Black Gold Saw. I’m not a fan of figmas so that one just isn’t cuttin’ it. There really hasn’t been any news on it since Wonder Festival (unless I’m just way outta the loop on this). I wonder why…….
Anyway, out of all of them she’s the only one who really catches my eye.

    • Tier says:

The note on Tsuki-board suggests it has an April release date, though I don’t know where that information comes from and I think that’s an optimistic estimate since it hasn’t gone up for preorder yet. I’d guess a June release is likely, with an even more likely delay that pushes her further towards the end of summer. Ordinarily I’d say they’d have to get that figure out soon to maintain interest in the BRS franchise but seeing their sales data for last year, I suppose it wouldn’t be surprising if scaled figures aren’t a big priority for them.

      • The Endless General says:

I’d guess June or later, if I were a betting man. I don’t know where they got april from; if that were true preorders would have opened a long time ago. I really need to get a Black Rock Shooter; it would seem weird to have Dead Master and Black Gold Saw without the heroine lol. On that note, if you’re willing to sell your original BRS I’d gladly buy it lol.

        • The Endless General says:

Oh yeah, I finally broke down and preordered Sonico and Maxima…………I have no self control lol

        • Tier says:

I’ll keep that in mind if I do hock it … I’m really desperate for shelf space so I’m looking at the collection and seeing what I can move.

I have no self-control either. I just paid off my Shopping Mall Japan bill and now that that’s done, I’m like, “Great, now I’m back to my normal spending limit, what should I buy?”

          • Cantan says:

Selvaria! Oh wait, was that rhetorical question?

          • Tier says:

A good choice! Though I don’t need to go through Yahoo Japan to get her, I think. At least, I’m assuming she’s not sold-out planetwide, which I guess is never a good assumption when it comes to Alter’s stuff.

          • The Endless General says:

Preorders for Black Gold Saw opened today; with a projected June release. What are the freakin’ odds? Lol. Sorry, I just had to share that bit of comedic news, as it made my day.

Oh, and I got my Asuka today. Come to think of it, today was a really good day lol.

          • Tier says:

I am a genius! Hehe, I guess that was a pretty easy guess. Any day where you get cool new stuff is a great day. Man I’ve got so much stuff I need to photograph.

  11. BioToxic says:

That’s one awesome looking BRS Daki! I noticed she’s on a checkerboard bed cloth as well instead of the usual bland white which is cool. Her face on the backside looks cute and her 2 tone eyes are nice, I’m not sure about the fangs though. She seems to have lost her scars on the back, or maybe they’re just hidden by her pose.

Some of the other Daki at Evening Call look really good too – that Panty & Stocking one in particular. If only the genuine products weren’t so expensive.

    • Tier says:

The artist did a great job with the background, especially with the way the folds are drawn on it. I completely forgot that the scars should’ve wrapped around to her back. Maybe she’s wearing makeup or something, I’m sure there are cosmetics out there that can hide that sort of thing. More likely the artist put all his attention on sketching that fine ass, I guess.

Funny that you mention that P&S pillowcase …

      • Cantan says:

Now that you mention that about the scars, it does seem funny. It’s almost as though whoever you bought it off knew about the earlier bootlegs, took an existing design and added some more details to differentiate their version… just seem to have forgotten the consistency.

        Hey, it’s a theory anyway!

        • Tier says:

It could be! It’s highly unlikely though because I ordered it from White Canvas, and they got their stock from Evening Call so nobody added anything to the design.

  12. Not into this dakimakura stuff but honestly speaking, this BRS actually looks really good, front and back. =) Not sure if it’s just the angle, though, but her head looks really big and not in proportion to her body (front view anyway)?

    • Tier says:

Yeah, she gots a big huge head. Though a lot of anime characters do, I guess, and BRS’s head seems bigger than most; I’m looking at the original rock cannon figure and I swear her head looks wider than her hips.

  13. drakanity says:

Nice, thanks for the review. Glad to see another daki finally! Thanks for your help and advice as well.

    • Tier says:

Thanks and you’re welcome. It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten a new dakimakura cover before I got this one and the other one, but more are in the pipeline.

  14. Phil says:

Pillow cases will never get my hard earned dollar!!

    Ahem.

How much did that Pillow case run you?

And are we betting on the super bowl or what :p

    • Tier says:

Ha, and Jerry Jones said he wasn’t going to fire Wade Phillips. This one cost like 12,000 yen, plus proxy expenses. Uhh, I guess overall with shipping, the cost was nearly $200. Now that I think about it, that’s a pretty ridiculous price to pay for a pillowcase. Admittedly, Hobby Search and Amiamia also stock dakimakura covers for much cheaper prices (relatively), but they don’t sell really raunchy ones.

I am not a betting man; I think the last time I bet on a sporting event, I bet my brother $10 that Mike Cofer would miss a field goal for the 49ers. Of course he wound up hitting it. I do like predictions, though, so I’m gonna predict that the Super Bowl will be Eagles versus Ravens, with the Eagles winning 24-16.

  15. Aka says:

You know… when you said you bought this I kind of felt in different towards it. She didn’t seem that great to me, but not terrible. Looking at her now, I like. I think she looks pretty good, I love the fangs, I love how she’s drawn, and I really hope someone scans theirs and posts it on a site somewhere. I still can’t justify the expense of a daki considering all I’d use it for is a poster/wallscroll.

So until someone scans her in I’ll just rcs some of these pictures.

On that note actually, I don’t think anyone ever scanned in their Mafuyu daki either. What’s wrong with people, that one definitely deserves a scan, more so than this one.

    • Tier says:

I’m sorta surprised the original artwork hasn’t made it’s way to the Boorus, since the artist posts his stuff on Pixiv. I gotta sign up for an account on that site one of these days … it can’t be any more difficult than activating a Yahoo JP account.

I guess not a lot of people picked that one up. I don’t know many people who actually buy dakimakura covers, since they’re so expensive for what you get. I guess I could scan mine except I have no idea how to do it.

      • Aka says:

I’m a bit surprised as well, but then most artists only really post a sample shot of their daki so that it sells. When people scan them in, it much higher res and quality usually.

I don’t really know how to scan one in either, but I assume overlap is a good thing to have with each pass. Then upload the parts to oreno.imouto and let them put it together via photoshop for you. Maybe.

Pixiv’s easy to sign up for. There are even guides out there.

        • Tier says:

I guess I ought to learn how to do that one of these days. I’m guessing it’s kinda like stitching panoramic shots together. Not that I know how to do that either.

          • Aka says:

Photoshop will do that automagically now, so I just let it stitch everything for me. It’s usually pretty good so long as you give it sufficient overlap.

It works for stitching scans together as well, just less so and requires work fixing it’s mistakes more.

      • drakanity says:

        I second the scan lol.

But yea, people pretty much scan it in sections/pieces, and someone capable enough puts it together as was mentioned.

Although I was thinking if your camera is able to take detailed enough high resolution shots, you can possibly take a picture?

For example in this review, I noticed your second and sixth picture are decently large in dimension size. So if it can be taken at a higher res, straighten it out, and enhance it a bit, it may actually be usable lol.

        • Tier says:

it’s easier for me to take photographs than to do scans so I’m going to be sticking with photos. My camera has an 18 megapixel sensor and I substantially shrink the photos for web reproduction; I’m pretty sure they’re already usable as they are for what I upload them for, which is for people to see what the pillowcase looks like.

Two-way tricot is sort of a spandex-like material; it’s very stretchy and smooth. It also seems to be very thin and I’m always sort of afraid that I’m going to tear it whenever I handle the pillow, but I guess it’s supposed to stretch like that.

Clothes pins would probably be best, since I could pick up a good amount for cheap. It’s obviously not a very big room, so I can’t really pin them all up around the walls. I have another bar like the one that can be seen in the picture, about the right height for it. That’s why I was thinking hangers, so I could sorta browse through them, and it would be held even on both sides. But I could probably right it similarly if I attach some string to two clothes pins and attach them to both ends. Would certainly be cheaper. Maybe even buy a large sheet of fabric and cut out some squares to act as a buffer between the clothes pin and the dakimakura to prevent wear and tear.

    • drakanity says:

I use clothes pins for one of mine. It is sort of tacky since I bought a fairly large one that came with 6-8 that I found at a 99 cent store. It was the only type, so I just went with that. I would have tried a clipboard method that I saw another person use (which was very nice btw), but those are actually a bit more costly and I couldn’t find the right ones that look nice. The ones I found were all neon color. ><

And I also have a space issue (also since I have a couple detolfs). So I have couple hanging behind my 2 detolfs. I just put some weight on the top edge and it gives it a nice background lol.

  17. Shashin says:

Yeah, I saw the clipboard method mentioned when Googling how to hang them up. I’d do that, however, it would be costly and I’m not exactly looking to display them. Because unfortunately, it’s a more closeted hobby situation, and I do have company quite often, so they’ll be tucked away in a room that is out of reach. The room has racks that would prevent mass wall display. So while clipboard clips would work nicely for display, I have to go about it a bit differently. I still do want to display them, and be able to browse through them. So I’m just looking for a way to hang them all on a bar, so I could do so, much like you would browse through a rack of shirts. Though I do hope one day I’ll be able to hang them up all around a room. Would certainly be a site to see, with a dakimakura covers hanging around the entirety of a large room.

I like this cover but call me weird, but I don’t want the hentai side. I’m one for not liking hentai so when I opened this up and saw the G image, I was happy, then I saw the other side and I kinda sighed. I’ve been to multiple cons and it’s really damn hard to find a g rated cover.

    • Shashin says:

Yeah, dakimakura covers that are tame on both sides are definitely a small minority. Short of scouring Yahoo Auctions/the dakimakura blog for covers you may want to buy, your best bet is likely getting some custom printing done. Or checking out bigger retailers like Hobby Search; they have a good deal of explicit covers too, but all except for the occasional special Comiket item or two, are from bigger companies, including those that produce the source material (or have leased out the rights to use the material.) So that’s generally the place to go if you want a tamer cover from a mainstream anime.

    • Tier says:

Yeah, as Shashin says, your best bet would be to look at Hobby Search and Amiami; many of their pillowcases feature fan service but generally aren’t too explicit.

It’s sorta surprising nobody’s made an official Black Rock Shooter dakimakura cover; the whole franchise is built on merchandise.

Do Eveningcall only accept bank deposit? I see that this is available for order again, but their order form only asks for an address and quantity. What happens after placing an order with them?

    • Tier says:

I honestly do not know; I get my stuff from White Canvas, Doujindou, or Toranoana, most of the time. I think the Evening Call website states that they do not ship outside of Japan, so if you are in New Zealand I do not think they will let you order it. I’m in the US and none of those websites ships to foreign barbarians like me (White Canvas suggests that they do, but I once asked them about it and they ignored my e-mail) so I have to use a proxy service to order pillowcases like this.

      • Elixir says:

        Thanks for the response.

Yeah, I’m residing in NZ, but I have a Japanese address and the language isn’t the issue, the lack of Japanese bank account is–their order page is unclear. If it’s by credit card or Paypal, then I wouldn’t have any issues.

According to the main site, it will be available on Toranoana, Doujindou, White Canvas and D-Stage. Ordering from the official site requires bank deposit and has to be paid before the 25th of November, and they’ll ship in December. I guess I’ve answered my own question.

I checked all of those sites and they’re only taking preorders for the Guilty Gear Dizzy, which I’m not really interested in, despite liking the character. I couldn’t find anything on White Canvas.

Also, something to note: the artist (TID) isn’t Japanese, and the Japanese on eveningcall’s site sounds like it’s from a foreigner. I think they’re actually a Chinese doujin circle/person, living in Japan.

    hello
i would like to know on what website u got this pillow case because each other place i search was not this one.was similar but with lower detail
    thank you

    • Tier says:

I think I got this from White Canvas or Doujindou, though it’s sold out at both places now, I think, Probably your best bet will be to look at Yahoo Japan Auctions or Mandarake; I think they recently closed another round of preorders that are supposed to ship this month, so there might be more listings on YJA soon.

  21. Iner7ia says:

I realize this post is dead as can be, but I have a question. I looked at White Canvas and Doujindou and YJA and Mandarake. Half of those websites were unusable for me because I don’t speak Japanese (yet). Also, since it’s almost a year after you told him where to get that, I just wanted to know if you can tell me another place I can get it from. I am so frustrated. I’ve gone through pages and pages of google looking for this dakimakura. They have one JUST like it, but the scars aren’t there and it’s not as detailed.

If you don’t know where I can get this dakimakura directly, is there any way you could give me a computer image that could be used for submission for my own custom pillow?

    Thank you for your time.

    • Shashin says:

Dakimakura covers are very rarely available for long after their initial preorder period; this BRS cover actually got a re-release a few months back but it’s once again sold out at major consignment shops and no longer available directly from the circle (Evening Call.) Pretty much your only chances of getting a legit copy are through Mandarake or YJA, neither of which currently have it listed. You’re pretty much just going to have to keep an eye out if you really want it or hope that Evening Call resells it at some point.

    • Tier says:

Shashin pretty much covered everything. It appears to be one of their more popular products and I would not be tremendously surprised if they reissued it in the future. You could ask them if they have any plans to do so; TID appears to be very fluent in English.

      • Iner7ia says:

I see. I’m kind of new when it comes to these kinds of things. I really hope they do reissue it. I don’t really know about the makers of the product either, so how would I go about asking TID?

        • Shashin says:

Your best bet would probably be to ask them via Twitter; they’ve been very responsive in the past, and it was actually though a Twitter conversation that they started selling to international customers. You could either do that, or send them an inquiry via their website. Either way, I’d just recommend telling them that you’d love if they would do a resale of the BRS cover, or ask if they plan on opening it up again at some point. Honestly, I don’t think one person will change their mind one way or the other, but if there’s enough interest, I think they would be willing to sell it again. They’ve resold a few of their covers in the past that were really popular.

          Their Twitter: https://twitter.com/evening_call
          Their website inquiry page: http://eveningcall.net/Inquiry.aspx

Lines on the inquire page are name, email, subject, comment.

          • Iner7ia says:

Thank you very much. One more question — If they are willing to sell me one, do they do custom dakimakuras? I know this sounds strange – but I honestly don’t want the side with the nudity. I’d rather replace that with another image.

          • Shashin says:

Unlikely. They commission artists to do work for them, so your best bet would be to find an artist you like and try to commission them to do the work for you and then take it to a custom printer like Hobby Heart or something. If you want dakimakura covers without nudity though, you’re probably best off looking at sites like AmiAmi/Hobby Search; all of their products are officially licensed, so unless the source material is an eroge, it’s likely to be ecchi at worst.

Evening Call does have a rewards program that once you hit a certain point, you can choose a character and they’ll draw a cover that’s unique for you, so I imagine you might have a bit of creative control (but the details aren’t entirely known) but to get there, you’d need to spend about $10,000… so it isn’t a very viable option just to get one cover of the non-nude variety.

  22. Tier says:

Yeah, as Shashin mentioned, I think it’s doubtful they’d do a custom-made dakimakura cover unless you waved a lot of money at them. I think it’d cost a lot less than $10k to commission a custom-made pillowcase, though, so if you really want one, I’d go ahead and ask, as long as your bank balance is healthy.
