Nadie from El Cazador de la Bruja

Alter Nadie from El Cazador de la Bruja Review

With no figures in the mail, I turn to my existing collection for photography practice. Let’s take a look at Nadie, one of the heroines of El Cazador de la Bruja. Nadie is a fairly old figure and she’s been on my shelf for a while; I had to clean some spiderwebs off of her before I took pictures. Yucko.

Sculpted in 1/8 scale by Alter, Nadie is depicted in an awesome action pose, arms outstretched and eye sighted down her gat. Unfortunately for Nadie, it’s the wrong eye, as her right eye is occluded by her cinnamon locks. Her left eye, fully visible, veritably twinkles with confidence, accentuated by her self-assured smirk. Twisty twirly hair trails out to one side, further emphasizing the dynamic nature of her pose.

I really like figures that show a strong sense of movement, and Nadie certainly does just that. Nadie looks fantastic overall, particularly as I have a special fondness for the girls with guns genre.

She comes with a cloak, but I forgot to put it on her while I was taking pictures. Oh well. I’m not much of a fan of capes, anyway. It’s one reason I like Marvel’s comic book heroes rather than DC’s; it seems like every DC hero wears a cape.

Another fashion note: of the sixty-plus figures I own, Nadie is the only one that wears shorts.

Alter Nadie from El Cazador de la Bruja Review

I know very little about this anime series other than that it was produced by Bee Train and presents motifs similar to Noir and Madlax. I’ve only seen the first episode of Madlax and couldn’t suspend disbelief when she changed into a dress in the middle of a firefight. I did like Noir a lot, however. It’s a bit of a shame that Mireille and Kirika haven’t received PVC love, although I seem to recall that somebody made a cold-cast statue of each of them.

Does it seem like there aren’t as many action girls as there used to be? Growing up, I remember there was Bubblegum Crisis, Gunsmith Cats, Iria, Burn Up, and a bunch more. Even the girls with guns genre seems to be drying up (note to self: watch Canaan sometime and see if it’s any good).

Oh beautiful review with great picture >__<

  2. ninjovee says:

She’s a very lovely figure! And I also love the lighting and the setup you had for it. Great job!

  3. Guy says:

When you give a close-up of her face, I’m troubled by how lax and easy going it seems.

Pretty good figure. I don’t know how I feel about the two pins.

Added you to my (incomplete) links page. As explained there, you are under no obligation or expectation to add me back.

  4. Guy says:

Ah, also, dunno how I forgot, “Castle of the witch”?

  5. Tier says:

    >> Leonia
Thanks! I’m trying to do some different things with my pictures; I think these are much more interesting than my old ones with that ugly blue curtain.

    >> ninjovee
Thanks to you too! You know, I spent probably four or five hours building that backdrop and then it got blurred out of pretty much all the pictures I took.

    >> Guy
I’m not sure where her cockiness comes from, but she looks like a pistolero who knows she’s not going to get hit. Which I guess is understandable since the adversaries in Noir were some of the most awful shots in all of anime.

The pins are kinda distracting; I guess they have to be metal to support her weight. When I was shooting the pictures I thought she was badly warped because her aim is elevated, but looking at the publicity photos it seems that’s the way she’s supposed to be.

Wikipedia says the translation is “The Hunter of the Witch.” I dunno what that denotes; I should spend an afternoon watching the show to re-acquaint myself with the girls with guns genre.

  6. meronpan says:

    wow, vintage! err wait, no nm, she’s less than 2 years old? ^^;; i guess anything that came out before i started collecting just feels dated ^^;

nice pics! looks like she’s held up against leaning despite her pose (which is excellent ^^)

  7. Tier says:

Yeah, I guess she’s only about a year and a half old? I thought she was older than that. I’m sort of amazed she’s not bent or anything; I still have to fix KOS-MOS’s ankles sometime since she can’t stand up straight anymore.

  8. The series is called Witch Hunter (El Cazador de la Bruja), just so you know…
Also, her name, Nadie, means Nobody in Spanish. Interesting

  9. Guy says:

No, it’s not cocky, cocky is a smirk or such, more… “I’m asleep in my bed.”

More lazy sculpting than a character feature 😉

I took five years of Spanish in high school and I didn’t even notice her name until you mentioned it just now. Interesting that Alter’s made not just one but two figures of characters named Nobody.

    >> Guy
I guess we see different things. To me she looks cocky and playful rather than lethargic.

  11. I think maybe Guy sees “I’m asleep in my bed” in her pose alone; it almost looks as though she were laying on something.

  12. Tier says:

Ah, yeah, I can see that. It’s pretty cool how different people see different things in her expression; I like figures where their mood is open to interpretation rather than being straightforward (like the typical happy expression with the sideways D mouth, of which I should be getting an example of in a week or two).

  13. Blowfish says:

I would love to have her in my collection.
    Sexy Girl,Gun,awesome pose…

I watched El Cazador dela Bruja up to episode 8 or so and dropped it then. The series wasnt really that great for me.

  14. Tier says:

Ah, that’s unfortunate. Noir started dragging around the middle too, I remember. I have the feeling that these shows might’ve been better as tightly-paced, 12 or 13 episode shows.

  15. Ayra says:

I’m wayyy late to comment on this figure, but since I just finished watching El Cazador, I looked for that figure and I have a big question.

I’ve seen two “variants” of this figure. I thought that one might be boot-legged or something, but I’m now wondering if it’s mainly a case of “promoshots vs real figure”.

If you look at Alter’s official site, the figure is different from yours. http://www.alter-web.jp/figure/08/01_2/index.html
There’s only 1 pin instead of two, leg and hand position is slightly different, and the hair isn’t identical either.

I admit I prefer the 1-pin version, but I’m not sure it actually exist in the final state or not: If that’s the case it feels pretty lazy on the part of Alter to have completely non-accurate pictures of the figure on their website. Half the place I see that still lists Nadie have the 2 pin pictures like yours, and the other half have the 1 pin promo shots. Do you have any idea if the 1-pin version actually exist, or the only one that does is the one you have and the 1-pin is only a scrapped prototype?

Anyway, regarding the show itself, for me it was the most entertaining show I’ve ever watched in all my life, every movie/anime/series included. From what I can see, it’s either “love” or “hate” regarding this show. I think that mostly rely on if you love Nadie, Ellis and their relationship or not. If you love the characters, then every episode is awesome: All the “filler” episodes serves to slowly grow out their relationship (with a ton of comedy) and I personally even prefered those episodes to the more serious ones (Although the ending was actually awesome, unlike most shows). If you ended up caring about the main plot instead of the characters that are part of it, then odds are you’ll find El Cazador pretty boring.

If you go in this show expecting a deep storyline with epic constant battles, you’ll be disapointed. If you expect a comedy with some genuinely touching moments, awesome light-hearted banter between the characters, lots of tacos and a splash of action, you’ll be in heaven.

    • Tier says:

I’m pretty sure that the figure that Alter used is just a promo version. Just looking at their pictures, it looks like a lot of their prototypes use clear bases whereas virtually all of their production figures have colored bases. I’m pretty sure that a one-pin version doesn’t exist; I can’t imagine it’d stay stable for very long and it looks like the reason they didn’t include the second pin in their promo photos is because the placeholder base is too small.

I never did watch El Cazador but I’m thinking about picking up the DVDs from Rightstuf, since they’ve got their Christmas sale going on now. I really enjoyed Noir and given the dearth of girls-with-guns anime out there, I think I would enjoy it. Also, I’m finding that I like Sora no Otoshimono a lot while but I’m not enjoying Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls as much as I thought I would, and since the former is a quasi-romantic comedy while the latter is a fanservice fight show, your description makes El Cazador sound more appealing. Plus I like tacos and Tex-Mex food in general.
