Dakimakura Review – Mercy from Overwatch (NSFW)

Mercy from Overwatch

So once again I have lied; I had hoped to get a few figure reviews done this month, particularly Olga and a couple of other Native figures, but that hasn’t happened, partly because of Azur Lane (I’m trying to get Baltimore), partly because of me watching the debates (I need to see whose doll I should next get), and mostly because I am lazy. Rather than skipping this month entirely, let’s take a quick look at a pornographic pillowcase, since we haven’t done so in quite a while (not since Olga, ironically enough). We’ll take a look at this depiction of Mercy, which seems apropos since playing Blizzard games is one of the major reasons why updates on this site have slowed down in the last few years. Though not so much because of Battle for Azeroth; that expansion is just dreadful.

This pillowcase features Mercy, the healer character from Blizzard’s first-person shooter Overwatch. I have yet to play Overwatch since I am told that it doesn’t have full support for solo play against bots, though perhaps that has changed since I last researched that. Blizzard’s games have had a formative and enduring impact on my life – mostly in the negative sense, though, as Diablo was one of the main reasons I slacked off on my college admission applications and World of Warcraft was a principal factor in me not getting a job for quite some time after graduating. I do enjoy their games – or at least, their earlier titles – and therefore I am okay with buying merchandise featuring their characters. In addition, being that I tend to have a love-hate relationship with their games, and that my sentiments regarding their design philosophies are nearing a nadir at this time, it also seems appropriate that this merchandise is both obviously unlicensed and quite pornographic.

I usually regard the “front” side of a dakimakura cover as the one presenting the forward-facing view of the character, but in this case the rear view is the less explicit view so I’m showing this side first. The artwork for this pillowcase is done by Cian Yo, a Taiwanese artist who frequently draws the female characters from Overwatch and League of Legends.

This pillowcase was sold by BWStore, a Taiwanese shop that sells dakimakura covers from a number of different artists. They’ve been around for quite a while and I actually bought a dakimakura cover from them back in 2011, though I never reviewed it here (of Kobato from Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai). They are happy to sell to international customers, which is a little unusual in this business.

Also unusual is this pillowcase’s size, which is about 150 centimeters in length and 50 centimeters in width. Many Japanese circles sell dakimakura covers that are 160 centimeters long, but I imagine that BWStore uses a Taiwanese factory to print their products.

This pillowcase was released in the spring of last year and has been sitting unopened in my review pile ever from then until today, which is why it’s quite creased. BWStore occasionally offers additional production runs of their pillowcases but I have never seen this one get a follow-up release.

That’s a little bit of a shame since it’s a really nice pillowcase, as long as one doesn’t mind a somewhat Asian-looking spin on Mercy’s appearance. Personally, I quite like the way she looks.

The image used for this pillowcase is also quite lewd, which seems fitting as Blizzard apparently does not like their characters being used in pornographic works. But though I don’t particularly like their current crop of games and I have no fondness for the style of their corporate governance, I do like their character designs. This is a really nice representation of Mercy, a character that otherwise doesn’t have much representation in the doujin dakimakura cover world.

That’s indeed a nice pillowcase. I happen to have ordered two dakis at BWStore, which are scheduled to be released this month. I’m keen to see how they turn out.

    You liar!

I actually debated picking this one up, but I’m not the biggest fan of the material B&W Store uses these days. So I really have to like a cover before I consider buying from them, anymore. It’s a shame, since they really do release a lot of nice designs.

My first real passion was following the pro BW scene. I was incredibly sad when Blizzard basically killed it over night to make SCII the premier esport. I feel like the game lost of a lot of visual clarity and it just wasn’t as much fun to watch as BW was. Other than that, I’m really looking forward to losing my life to WoW Classic again…

I think the thing I like the most about them is that they have a variety of artists doing the pillowcase artwork. I have yet to order anything from Cuddly Octopus but I was going to try getting a couple of dakimakura covers from them, too.

I feel like Blizzard has become just another game company. I still have both of my World of Warcraft accounts active, but I’m really not sure why as I just have no enthusiasm for the game now. I bought Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 but I never actually played either. Given that I disliked Legion and loathe Battle for Azeroth, I’m not expecting that Shadowlands will be any good.

Thanks! It’s been a little humbling seeing how many people missed this site while I was taking a break. It’s something that I really appreciate.
