Doll Review – vmf50 Risa (NSFW)

Yamato vmf50 Risa Doll Review

The vmf50 series are the newest dolls in my collection, but my doll-collecting habits go way back. In fact, before I collected anime figures, I collected dolls. I think I got my first doll back around 2003 and my collection rapidly grew to around a dozen 1/6 scale dolls. When I got into PVC figures, my doll collecting tapered off and nowadays, I don’t buy very many of them. When I first saw Yamato’s vmf50 doll, though, I decided that this was something worth getting. I got my first vmf50 doll earlier this year and I’ve since built up a small collection of doll clothes and accessories. I named her Simone, but Yamato calls this doll Risa and that’s what I’ll call her for the purpose of this review.

Compact Hog from Tsukasa Bullet

Yamato Compact Hog from Tsukasa Bullet Figure Review

Here’s another girl with a gun. This used to be a staple of anime, but seems to have fallen out of favor with the zeitgeist and I can’t understand why. Maybe firearms aren’t moe? I dunno. I don’t even know what moe is, anyway. Jun Tsukasa’s art definitely ain’t moe, but I suppose if he tried to do something in the archetypical moe style, it’d look something like this girl here.

Doujinshi and Doll Stuff, Part 1 (NSFW)

People are surprised when I tell them that I collect dolls, and what is perhaps even more surprising is that I’ve been collecting dolls for far longer than I’ve been buying anime figures. I don’t play around with them much – most are stuck in a drawer or in a couple of cardboard boxes now – but I do enjoy buying them and dressing them up. More recently, I’ve begun collecting doujinshi, and with most of my June preorders yet to ship I thought that I’d take some time to share these things.

Amanda Werner from Blassreiter

Yamato Amanda Werner from Blassreiter Figure Review

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular figures on Tsuki-board. There’s this K-On! girl, who’s just a skinny little kid. Black Rock Shooter‘s chest is practically concave. Miku’s head looks wider than her shoulder blades. Dead Master appears to be in desperate need of some Plumpy’nut. Anime girls generally trend towards the anorexic, but some studios appreciate the curvature, and Nitroplus definitely falls in that category. We’ve seen a lot of figures of Nitroplus characters and many of them are busty and full-figured, but Amanda redefines what it means to bring the boom.

Velvet from Odin Sphere (SIF EX Version)

Yamato Velvet from Odin Sphere Figure Review

Last year, when figure sites posted up pictures of Velvet, the figure-buying collective gushed over Bubba’s latest creation. Would it make into mass-market form? If so, who would do the honors? Max Factory, maybe? They and Bubba had collaborated before, and Max Factory has certainly always had the full confidence of the fanbase.

Then Yamato announced that they would be doing the job. Exuberance evaporated into anxiety and exhilaration flash-boiled into exasperation.

I wasn’t too distressed since I like Yamato, but I wondered how she’d turn out; Yamato’s done a nice job with REFLECT’s sculpts, but I was curious as to whether they could do justice to Bubba’s masterpiece. How did she turn out?

Kanu Uncho from Ikki Tousen (Project Dynamite #001 Extra Color Version) (NSFW)

Yamato Kanu Unchou from Ikkitousen Review

Here is yet another manifestation of Kanu Unchou, the preeminent poster girl of the Ikkitousen franchise. Some people – probably a lot of people, actually – would say that Kanu is ridiculously overrepresented and that the plastic used to manufacture Kanu figures could be better used elsewhere. Like on that Black Rock Shooter girl, for instance. I wouldn’t be among them, myself; I like Kanu, I’ve liked Kanu since she first appeared in Battle Vixens. I initially thought Hakufu and Kaku Bunwa were going to be the series’ main characters, so I’m quite happy that Kanu has received the love that she has. While there are about a billion figures of her out there, this version of Kan-san is a little bit different than the rest.

Iroha from Samurai Shodown (Yamato SIF EX Version)

Yamato Iroha SIF EX from Samurai Shodown Review

We have here Iroha, another female combatant from a fighting game. Iroha has had a peculiarly enduring presence in the figure world considering her limited exposure in the Samurai Shodown series. Here we have the latest figure in her likeness, sculpted by diskvision and manufactured by Yamato as part of their SIF EX lineup.

Cammy from Street Fighter Alpha (Pink Capcom Girls Version)

Yamato Cammy from Street Fighter Alpha Review

Hobby Link Japan had this free shipping dealy going on a couple weeks ago, and I took advantage of it to pick up Cammy. This version of Cammy comes from the Street Fighter Zero/Alpha games, as does my other Cammy. I like her Delta Red costume more, and it’s a bit curious that figure manufacturers seem to prefer depicting her in her Shadaloo uniform.

Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion (Creator’s Labo Version)

Yamato Rei Ayanami Review

Back to the backlog! This week has been filled with Kanu reviews and here we have another popular subject for figure manufacturers, Rei Ayanami, perhaps the superstar of the figure world. Rei’s legacy is as enduring and persisent as Brett Favre, and with at least two more figures up for preorder on Hobby Search as of the time of this writing, she is not going to go away anytime soon. This particular figure, set in 1/7 scale from Yamato, is inspired from a Shunya Yamashita drawing, and it’s been out for a while. I think I got this particular figure around a year ago, and a resin kit version has been around for even longer than that.

Kanu Uncho from Ikki Tousen (Yamato SIF EX Version)

Yamato Kanu Uncho Review

The first computer I ever used was an Apple II+ clone. By today’s standards, it is prehistoric in performance, with a 1 MHz clock speed and 48 KB of system memory. The particular computer I had featured two full-height 5.25″ disk drives which emitted a particularly loud series of clicks when in operation (I found the noise peculiarly soothing). Its built-in BASIC interpreter was amusing, and I spent many hours playing games like The Bard’s Tale and Wasteland, but otherwise it wasn’t a very useful computer. Certainly it gave me no idea of what computers would allow people to do twenty years later. However, I loved that ancient machine. You remember first things fondly, and sentimentality always cloaks their limitations, deficiencies, and flaws.

Like my old computer, I think this Kanu Uncho figure is great, not because it’s a beautiful figure (it’s definitely not), but because it’s the first one I owned.
