Mu-12 from BlazBlue: Chronophantasma

Mu-12 from BlazBlue

Arc System Works’s BlazBlue is the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear, and on the whole both series are quite similar. Both are fast-paced 2D fighting games; both feature a colorful cast of eclectic and memorable characters; both feature awesome instrumental rock and heavy metal soundtracks. However, there is one area where BlazBlue diverges from its forebear and that’s in how it has been marketed. Guilty Gear is by no means an obscure series but it has always been something of a niche game; furthermore, its popularity has always been keyed by the game itself. With BlazBlue, however, Arc System Works is evidently trying to expand its appeal beyond its core fanbase. The most obvious attempt is its recently-concluded anime adaptation, titled BlazBlue: Alter Memory. BlazBlue has also been the subject of a heavy merchandising effort, including the usual telephone cases, telephone cards (often depicting Noel being molested by Rachel, or vice versa), soundtrack collections, and dakimakura covers – Arc System Works released the first dakimakura cover of Noel Vermillion way back at Comiket 76 in summer of 2009, and apparently she’s getting another one next month, and several other characters (including Jin Kisaragi, which surely made the ladies happy) have gotten or will be getting immortalized on a pillowcase. And of course, BlazBlue has gotten a variety of figures, including one of protagonist-turned-antagonist-turned-protagonist-again Mu-12, which is what we’ll be looking at here.

Eucliwood Hellscythe from Is This a Zombie? (Bunny Version)

Eucliwood Hellscythe from Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?

I always like receiving FREEing’s bunnygirl figures. Sure, none of them are exemplars of precision craftsmanship and they are invariably a colossal pain in the ass to photograph, being that all of my backdrops are constructed for smaller figures, but their titanic size commands attention. Their outfits – generally a leotard and fishnet pantyhose ensemble – are also attractive, and even the bunny ears are kinda growing on me. This particular figure features its own unique cachet in that it’s one of only a couple figures – that I am familiar with, anyway – of Eucliwood Hellscythe, the quiet necromancer from Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka?, or Is This a Zombie? The other one is some midget Beach Queens figure so it doesn’t count. Arguably this one shouldn’t count either, being that neither her sunny disposition nor her outfit really fit her, but it’s not like Eu has many more figures to pick from, and so beggars can hardly be choosers.

Ganessa Roland from Freezing (Sexy Version) (NSFW)

Ganessa Roland figure by FREEing

The fourth FREEing Freezing girl is Ganessa Roland, a student at West Genetics with the nickname “The Angel of Binding.” Like series heroine Satellizer, she’s a British girl, though while Satella is timid and withdrawn, Ganessa is a haughty, arrogant, and brash fireball. In the very first episode of the anime adaptation, we see Ganessa in action as she assaults and defeats Satellizer, and for a while it seemed like she would serve as an antagonist – or at least as a foil – to the show’s lead girl. Strangely, if I recall correctly, she then fades into the background for much of the rest of the series, not really doing much until the last couple of episodes – though she does make a brief appearance in the prom episode, dressed as a dominatrix. At any rate, she’s gotten a figure of her own so let’s take a look at it.

Rana Linchen from Freezing (Sexy Version) (NSFW)

Rana Linchen from Freezing by FREEing

Freezing is one of the worst anime series I’ve watched to completion but that hasn’t stopped it from inexplicably getting a second season (titled, with all appropriate subtlety, Freezing Vibration). Nor has that stopped it from receiving a number of figures, which is more understandable given the pleasing looks of much of the show’s (and manga’s) principal cast. FREEing has made the majority of them, including lead girl Satellizer el Bridget. Today we’ll look at her co-star and romantic rival, the happy Tibetan homewrecker Rana Linchen.

Kuroko Shirai from A Certain Scientific Railgun (Bunny Version)

Kuroko Shirai figure by FREEing

Last time, we looked at some monstrously large breasts; today, we’ll flip it one hundred and eighty degrees and look at a far more modest rack. However, while the previous character exemplified purity, grace, and tact, Kuroko Shirai embodies … well, none of those things.

Fate T. Harlaown from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (Bunny Version)

Fate T. Harlaown Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha StrikerS Figure Review

The latest bunny figure from FREEing is Fate T. Harlaown, Nanoha’s adversary-turned-best-buddy. It was a little weird seeing Nanoha in the skimpy bunny costume, since her sex appeal isn’t typically played up, at least when it comes to figures. However, Fate looks right in her bunnysuit, which is actually not much less modest than what she normally wears to a fight. They look great together, though, and while Fate and Nanoha are meant to be a matched pair (or threesome, if you count Hayate), Fate offers a number of contrasts to her partner that make this figure even more appealing.

Nanoha Takamachi from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (Bunny Version)

Nanoha Takamachi Figure Review

FREEing’s bunnygirl series are multiplying like – well, rabbits – and the newest one is none other than the Ace of Aces herself, noted combat instructor and porn game extra Nanoha Takamachi. They could have picked any version of Nanoha that they wanted and so they chose to use her nineteen-year old form, as she appears in the third anime series Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS. It’s a good decision, at least in my view, since though I have no problem with younger-looking characters – that I own FREEing’s Nymph figure is a reflection of that – this version of the captain has a number of charms that Nymph does not.

Nymph from Sora no Otoshimono: The Angeloid of Clockwork (Bunny Version)

Nymph figure from Sora no Otoshimono

Anime fans have this funny way of being able to fetishize almost anything. Eyeglasses, weapons, musical instruments, headphones – these are just a few things used to elevate the appeal of anime characters. Intrinsic aspects of the characters themselves also lend themselves well to infatuation – various anime fans may prefer different personality types, hairstyles, skin color … and of course, breast sizes. Characters span the gamut of bust sizes, from impossibly large to flat as a flyover state, and many people have strong opinions as to which they like best. Nymph is placed firmly at the smaller end of the scale. However, even though her endowment is humble, FREEing’s Nymph still makes a strong argument for that old maxim that bigger is better.

Satellizer el Bridget from Freezing (Sexy Version) (NSFW)

Satellizer el Bridget from Freezing Figure Review

Any figure labeled the “Sexy Version” is going to get my attention, particularly when it’s of a destructive sword-wielding English girl prone to entering a berserker rage. It’s a mildly humorous label, though, since sexiness is surely in the eye of the beholder and there’s probably a not-insignificant fraction of the figure collecting community who would not consider a buxom blonde girl like Satella to be sexy. Believe it or not.

Amane Shiratori from Anata no Shiranai Kangofu (NSFW)

FREEing Amane Shiratori Figure Review

Anybody who’s read this site for a while knows that I like ero figures. And anybody who’s read this site for a while knows that I like big figures. Unfortunately, few figure manufacturers have made big ero figures – at least until recently. However, FREEing has stepped up to the plate to fill this niche, which is quite gratifying, particularly when the figure is as nice as Amane is.
